William M. Blackshear, Jr., M.D., Director

  • Magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University
  • Medical degree from Tulane University where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honorary society
  • Surgical residency at Tulane University
  • Vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Washington where he participated in research pioneering the use of duplex scanning and Doppler spectrum analysis for the detection of arterial and venous diseases
  • Developed one of the most widely used diagnostic tests for quantitating carotid artery atherosclerosis
  • Established the first complete non-invasive vascular laboratory in the region
  • Established the first vascular surgery residency training program in Florida
  • Certified in both vascular surgery and general surgery by the American Board of Surgery
  • Performed the first intra-arterial stent insertions in the region
  • World's first surgeon to perform carotid endarterectomy based solely on ultrasound diagnosis eliminating potential complications of angiography
  • Over fifty publications in medical literature
  • Member of more than twenty scholarly and honorary medical societies
  • Accomplished endovascular surgeon with expertise in balloon angioplasty, intravascular stents, mechanical atherectomy, intravascular ultrasound, stent-grafts and angioscopy
